AYUTTHAYA--Marlon Tapales became the fourth active Filipino world boxing champion after knocking out Pungluang Sor Singyu for the WBO bantamweight championship on Wednesday.

Tapales, the challenger, bounced back from two fifth round knockdowns and delivered the haymaker to the erstwhile champ in the 11th to silence the latter's home country crowd.

A known Filipino tormentor, Sor Singyu appeared to be heading to a successful defense of his title after sending Tapales to the canvas twice in Round 5.

But Tapales scored one knockdown back in Round 6 as he slowly got his way back to the bout.

Tapales then hurled a left hook to the head of Sor Singyu in the penultimate period that sent the latter down for good, completing the comeback.

Tapales, which improved to 29-2 with 12 stoppages, joins Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes, and John Riel Casimero as the active world titleholders from the Philippines.
