MANILA-- JP Voltes bucked a gallant defensive stand by Laos, but got its act together in time for a comprehensive 4-0 rout as first round action goes into the homestretch Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Takashi Odawara bagged a brace for the playoff winners, scoring in both halves to register their first league triumph against the formver Division 2 titlists.
Alen Angeles and Takumi Uesato were also on the board for playing manager Yu Hoshide's final match in charge, who moved up temporarily in third with 25 points, overtaking idle Loyola who plays Kaya as of this writing.
Odawara opened the scoring for Voltes, tapping in on a tight angle past Felipe Tripulca from Hoshide's low corner kick the 39th minutes, in which Angeles doubled the advantage from a John Celiz feed five minutes later for a 2-0 edge at the break.
Voltes continued their dominance at the restart, as the tall midfielder bagged his brace just thirty seconds after it began with a simple flick to the empty net, and Uesato completed the rout with a header coming off a William Espinosa feed from the right wing.
Despite the scoreline, the outgoing playing coach expressed disappointment despite the win, after coming from shocking wins over Kaya and Loyola the past two weeks.
"Of course, we are happy but we are poor today. I was bit disappointed, but sometimes, that is football, because it is important to win," said the former Global veteran after the match.
