“Blast Brothers” connive as Bombers deny Lions’ sweep bid in stunning upset

By Ricky Manliguis

SAN JUAN, MM—San Beda came to its match with Jose Rizal University eager to sweep the first round eliminations.

The Bombers, though, had other plans.

With Paolo Pontejos and Teytey Teodoro joining forces anew, the Muntinlupa-based squad pulled the biggest upset in the NCAA Season 92 with a come-from-behind 79-73 triumph over the Lions in the last day of Round 1 action at the FilOil Flying V Centre Tusday.

Trailing after three quarters, Pontejos scorched his way with a game-high 27 points, but none more important than his floater over the outstretched arms of Dan Sara that give the Bombers a 76-73 lead.

That particular basket was the highlight of the Bombers’ 31-11 windup, while also limiting the Lions to only seven points in the final period.

The senior guard shot 11-of-24 (46 percent) from the field, including five triples. He also issued four assists, the last one finding his “Blast Borther” Teodoro for a go-ahead triple from the left corner for a 74-73 count.

Teodoro added 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. Abdel Poutouochi notched a double-double of 14 and 12 rebounds.

The boys of Coach Vergel Meneses improved to a 4-5 win-loss card.

Donald Tankoua had 28 points for San Beda, which suffered its first loss of the season after a blistering 8-0 start. Davon Potts was the only other Lion in double figures with 11.
