RIO DE JANEIRO--Eric Cray notched a berth in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles in the Rio Olympics on Monday.
Cray finished third in Heat 4, finishing the race at 49.05 seconds, behind eventual winner Keisuke Nozawa of Japan, who set his new personal best at 48.68 seconds, and second placer Thomas Barr of Ireland, who had his best performance for the year at 48.93.
Cray bucked a slow start and finished strong enough to edge fourth-placed Jaheel Hyde of Jamaica for the semifinal spot. Only the top three runners in each heat will move on to the next round, which will happen on Wednesday.
