RIO DE JANEIRO--Yan Lariba gave a gallant stand but still lost to Congo's Han Xing, 11-7, 13-11, 11-9, 11-7, in the first round of the Olympic table tennis tournament on Saturday.
Despite Lariba staying close against her, Han, whose parents are Chinese, delivered in the endgame to quickly eliminate the first Filipino table tennis Olympian.
Lariba's loss put an early dent to the Philippines' bid to score a medal in the Olympiad as only 12 athletes are left to vie for a podium finish.
