RIO DE JANEIRO--Eric Cray and Maristella Sunang failed to land a spot in the finals of their respective Olympic athletics competitions on Wednesday (Philippine Time).
Cray faltered the final 150 meters of his 400-meter hurdles semifinal run, finishing even slower than his preliminary run at 49.37 seconds, ranked 17th out of 24 runners in all. Only eight moved on to the final.
On the other hand, the former Maristella Torres only jumped a maximum of 6.22 meters in her women's long jump stint, way shorter than her season-best of 6.72 as pain lingered at her left hip following the warm-ups. She finished 28th of 38 jumpers but way out of the cutoff for the finalists, which is set at 12.
The said developments leave Kirstie Alora as the remaining Filipino in the hunt for an Olympic medal. She is set to take on Mexican taekwondo jin Maria Espinoza on the penultimate day of the Olympiad on Aug. 21
