RIO DE JANEIRO--Charly Suarez bowed down to Joe Cordina of Great Britain via split decision in their Olympic boxing clash on Sunday (Philippine Time).

Cordina, who had the height and reach advantage over Suarez, got the better of the 28-29, 29-28, 30-27 scorecards in their lightweight match that catapulted him to the next round.

Suarez, on the other hand, is now officially out from the competition, further bringing down the Philippines' hopes of landing a medal in the Olympiad to ten.

The other Filipino pug, light flyweight Rogen Ladon, got an automatic second round berth due to a bye after the draw and will await the winner of the match between home country hero Patrick Lourenco and Colombia's Yurbejen Martinez.
