PASAY CITY— "The House of Mayhem" has
claimed its third victim.
De La Salle waxed hot from both ends
as it hammered out a 100-62 shellacking over University of Santo Tomas for its
third consecutive win in the UAAP Season 79 men’s basketball tournament at the
Mall of Asia Arena.
The Taft-based ballclub converted the
Tigers’ 40 turnovers to 34 points, while blowing the game wide open with a 33-9
third-quarter assault for an insurmountable 73-49 lead after three quarters.
The victory enabled the pre-tournament
favorites to take solo top spot in the standings with an immaculate 3-0 record.
Player of the Week Ben Mbala
muscled his way as the Cameroonian fashioned another double-double effort of 18
points and 16 rebounds, while Jeron Teng contributed 13 points, five rebounds,
two assists, and two steals.
Thomas Torres and Abu Tratter were the
other double-digit contributors with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
La Salle won the rebounding battle,
59-41, 26 coming from the offensive glass. It also had a plus-26 point
advantage in second chance points.
For the
Tigers, it was the team’s worst defeat since Ateneo gave them a sound 114-78
spanking on Aug. 6, 2006.
Renzo Subido
led the way for the España dribblers with 18 points, while Jamil Sherrif had
11. This season’s hosts dropped to a 1-2 win-loss card, tying defending
champions FEU Tamaraws.
