Eagles mangle winless Warriors in UAAP LXXIX

PASAY CITY—Ateneo bounced back from its stinging loss to Adamson as it trounced University of the East, 84-69, in the second game of Saturday’s UAAP Season LXXIX action at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After dodging asecond-quarter uprising by the Red Warriors, the Blue eagles outscored its opponents in the second half, 54-37, to book its third win in five games, tying the Falcons, the team that stunned them with a 61-62 loss last week.

The Warriors opened the second quarter battling back from a 9-20 deficit to grab the lead at halftime, 32-30, only for the Eagles to regroup and get back to its bearings coming out of the locker room.

Anton Asistio led the Katipunan-based dribblers with his career-high 21 points while converting all nine of his free throws. Adrian Wong chipped in 17, while Mike Nieto and Chibueze Ikeh both produced 11 markers.

Ateneo took advantage on UE’s 38 fouls, making good of 35 of its 52 attempts from the charity stripe.   

UE remained without a victory in five games so far, as rookie forward Alvin Pasaol ledall scorers with 22 points along with eight rebounds. Bonbon Batiller was the other double-digit scorer with 11 with six assists.
