MAD RUSH: The Wild Chase to Second

By Kevin Estrada

And so it begins.

Today will be the start of the most frantic chase of the season in which every goal scored will swing in favor of either of them

Seven Matches.
Four Clubs.
One spot to play for.

Welcome to the Mad Rush.

TO BEGIN..
With Global took the title (as well as the Double) already two weeks ago, the attention now shifts to the wildest chase of second place, as four clubs (Ceres, Loyola, JP Voltes and Kaya) are just four points apart as the league is into the homestretch.

AT STAKE..
These four clubs are not just fighting for second, but also a return to the splendor of Asian football next season, with at least a playoff for the AFC Cup up for grabs.

Last season saw Global nabbed second after thrashing Kaya in the penultimate matchday of the league. However, Kaya had the final laugh at the then-beleaguered and trophyless titlists, as they take advantage of Global's expulsion in the Cup to win it all (and spoil Ceres' double drive) and booked their spot in the AFC Cup this year.

ALL TO PLAY FOR
After Kaya blew by Green Archers United last Wednesday, all of the clubs involved will only have exactly two matches left on their schedule.

Ceres are the front runners (38 points, +87 Goal Difference), but they have the heaviest season-enders as they will face champions Global tomorrow, and fourth-placed JP Voltes (35pts, +31 GD) the following week, with the latter kicking off the wild chase today at 5PM when they play Laos.

Third-running Loyola (37pts, +59 GD) will start their race against fifth-ranked Kaya (34pts, +49 GD) later tonight at 7:30 and finish off with Stallion on Oct. 22.

After the Sparks, the deposed Cup holders finish off their season in a midweek against lowly Forza.

Kaya and Loyola brace for a key Battle Royale later tonight.

To conclude...
Filipino football fans are now having mixed feelings the way the season will end, with the Suzuki Cup and the upcoming PFL in the horizon, but surely enough, the fixtures will give us a spicy end to a great season for Philippine club football.
