PASAY—Malayan, despite playing with a depleted lineup, turned back San Beda-Taytay, 83-64, to win Game 1 of the NCAA juniors basketball finals at the Mall of Asia Arena on Thursday.

The Red Robins played without Sherwin Concepcion, who is recovering from a season-ending shoulder injury, and Mike Enriquez, who suffered a viral infection while also having Rom Junsay playing under the weather.

But the said health reports hardly mattered as the Red Robins dropped 30 points on the Red Cubs in the third quarter while limiting them to only nine in the fourth to move to within a win from dethroning their foes.

Jasper Salenga tallied 17 points, two rebounds, three assists, and three steals for Malayan, which can clinch the championship on Tuesday at the said venue.

Joshua Tagala had 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks for San Beda-Taytay.
