MANILA--The epic PBA Governors' Cup finals clash between Ginebra and Meralco was a huge hit on TV according to the PBA's official broadcaster TV5.

According to TV5 president Chot Reyes, the championship series went to as high as 45 percent in TV ratings.

“Halos kalahati ng mga nanood sa TV noon, naka-tune in sa PBA,” said Reyes, who was recently named Gilas coach again. “We’ve always had a good rating in any PBA finals. But the good rating soared to phenomenal in this series.”

He also believes that the fact that the Barangay, who won the series on a buzzer-beating three by Justin Brownlee in Game 6, helped a lot in making the finals more watchable than the drama programs of fellow TV giants GMA and ABSCBN.

“It’s not only the Barangay Ginebra mystique. It’s the fact that they’d not been there for years. Talagang nauhaw at nagutom ang tao,” Reyes said. “I don’t think it would be that huge if not for Ginebra and if Ginebra is there every year. The fact was that eight years sila nawala at biglang pumasok uli sa finals.”

On the other hand, he also said that there is nothing to take away from the Bolts. In fact, he added, “Every game was classic, each game bakbakan. Credit should also go to Meralco. They fought a good series, and the two teams engaged in a well-fought series,”

Also, the live stream of Game 6 was the most viewed match of the season with the total hits reaching 21 times more than the average viewers per game night.
