PASAY—The Philippine sepak takraw team came back home a triumphant squad after taking with them three medals from the King's Cup in Bangkok over the weekend.
Aboard a Thai Airways flight that arrived at NAIA Terminal 1 at 11:45 a.m. Monday, the national team of the country's national sport brought along one gold, one silver, and one bronze from the most prestigious sepak takraw tournament in the world.
The team won it all in the men's doubles category, dethroning world champion and host nation Thailand in the semifinals before beating reigning SEA Games titlist Myanmar in the finals.
"Very proud po kami because it's a very historic win. Six years ito in the making. Hindi po bumitaw yung mga atleta natin," said Karen Caballero, the president of the Philippine Amateur Sepak Takraw Association.
Skipper Jason Huerte then vowed for a repeat of his team's conquest of Myanmar in next year's SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
"[Ang SEA Games] ang paghahandaan namin ngayon sa pag-uwi namin dito," Guerre said.
The team got the silver in the men's team division, while the women's hoop squad took the bronze.
