QUEZON CITY—University of Santo Tomas’ nightmares are over, many
thanks to the hot shooting of Marvin Lee.
Lee provided the spark from beyond the arc as the Growling Tigers
tamed a suddenly vulnerable National U side, 73-69, to bring its five-game
losing spell to a halt in Saturday’s UAAP LXXIX action at the Big Dome.
The sophomore guard came away with a game-high 22
points, including three triples in a 9-0 run bridging the third and fourth
periods to give the España dribblers its third win as against seven losses.
After a tight 34-all in the first, the Tigers
unleashed its fangs anew to pad the lead to 60-47 in the middle of the final
canto.
NU came with a run of its own to come within five
points, but Lee and Louie Vigil killed its upset ambitions, connecting two consecutive
short-ranged shots for a 71-52 UST edge.
The 19-year old finished with a 5-of-7 clip from
downtown on top of four steals and three assists. Vigil added 20 points, seven
rebounds, and five dimes, while Jamil Sheriff cashed in 19 markers and six steals.
NU suffered its third consecutive setback to fall to
a 4-5 win-loss slate. Matt Salem and Alfred Aroga paced the team with 20 and 13
markers, respectively.
