PASAY—University of the East posted its second victory this season as it tamed the skidding University of Santo Tomas, 71-61, in the first game of Saturday’s action of the UAAP Season LXXIX men’s basketball tournament second round at the Mall Of Asia Arena.

Fresh from its morale-boosting maiden victory after a woeful 0-6 start, the Red Warriors frustrated the Tigers with its defensive intensity and balanced offense en route to the wire-to-wire win.

UE had a brilliant start, erecting a comfortable 10-point cushion after the first quarter, 23-13. They kept the double-digit advantage the entire ballgame, before UST mounted a mini-uprising to come within 59-69.

Mark Olayon scored 14 points and seven rebounds for UE, which forced UST to commit 32 turnovers and missing all six of its three-point attempts.

Alvin Pasaol and Edgar Charcos contributed nine points each, even as Emil Palma and Edcor Batiller accounted for eight and seven markers, respectively.

Wilson Bartolome had six markers before he sustained a cut above his left eye after William Afoakwah unintentionally elbowed him on a rebound sequence.

For this season’s hosts, it will be the team’s fourth loss in a row, and sixth over-all, despite the 21-point effort of Louie Vigil. Afoakwah and Jeepy Faundo were the other double-digit contributors with 10 apiece.
