MANILA--With Blackwater's loss to Mahindra on Christmas night, San Miguel is assured of being at the top of the team standings by the end of 2016.

However, the Beermen want to end the year solely at number one.

San Miguel looks to widen the gap in the race for first place entering 2017 as the team will face off with Meralco in the final PBA game for calendar year 2016 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay.

A win by the Beermen, currently at 4-1, in the 7 p.m. encounter with the Bolts will put them one full game ahead of joint second placers TNT KaTropa and Rain Or Shine Elasto Painters, who are both at 4-2.

However, a loss will send San Miguel to a tie with TNT and ROS at the top to the table.

GlobalPort, 3-2 at present, can even force a four-way logjam at first place assuming SMB loses if the team beats Phoenix in the first game of the doubleheader at 4:15 p.m.

After Wednesday night, the PBA will not hold games until Jan. 6.
