SAN JUAN—University
of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas booked contrasting wins to
open their UAAP LXXIX Juniors basketball second round campaigns on a bright
note at the FilOil-Flying V Centre, Jan. 14.
The Tiger
Cubs took control in overtime as it gored De La Salle-Zobel, 83-77, to tie its
victim with a 2-6 win-loss record.
Crispin
Cansino finished the game with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists,
but it was Rayjhun Baquial who dented the killer blows in the extra session,
pumping in six of the team’s 13 points for UST, which halted its three-game
losing skid.
Baquial
finished with 10 points, while Miguel Ratuiste had a double-double effort of 12
points and 11 rebounds. Ian Japzon added 11.
Martin
Romero led the Junior Archers, losers of five consecutive games, with 14, with
Jan Gabriel Sobrevega and John Anthony Umali combining for 23 points.
UPIS,
meanwhile, kept its Final Four hopes alive after making short work of the UE
Junior Warriors, 82-74, in the final match of the day.
Spitfire
Juan Gomez De Liano led four Maroons in double-figures with 19 points, 11 in
the fourth period, and 15 rebounds.
Raplh Luis
Labao and Enrique Estrera both came away with 15 markers, while Matt Santiago
cashed in 10.
UPIS
improved to a 3-5 card, a game behind Ateneo for the last slot in the Final
Four.
UE, which absorbed its seventh loss, were
backstopped by Andrei Dulalia and Sean Manaug, who tallied 18 and 16 points in
that order.
