Catalan wins all-Filipino bout against Miado; Nicolini submits Mazepa

By Ivan Saldajeno

PASAY—Robin Catalan braved one gallant stand from Jeremy Miado and walked away with a split decision win in the curtain-raiser of One: Kings of Destiny at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday night.

Catalan banked on his ground control to keep Miado at bay despite two near-submissions that somehow impressed one judge.

Still, the other two jurors found Catalan good enough to give them the better of the scorecards.

Meanwhile, Michelle Nicolini handed Irina Mazepa her first loss with a submission win.

The Singapore-based Brazilian held on to an arm bar that forced the Russian opponent to tap out at the 2:11 mark of the very first round.
