There will be a new name to the UAAP Football Trophy as Rico Andes struck twice to knock UP out of their throne. |
MANILA -- FEU dethroned
UP as the UAAP men's football champion after hacking out a 2-1 win in
the knockout semifinals at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Thursday
night.
Rico Andes' brace
turned out to be enough as the Tamaraws held off a last gasp attack from the
Fighting Maroons to secure a spot in the final on Sunday at the said
venue.
Andes drew first blood
for FEU in the 23rd minute with a header off a corner.
Kintaro Miyagi,
however, answered a minute later with a close range shot after FEU
keeper Ray Joyel failed to secure the save, leaving Miyagi with the
goal post wide open.
Andes put the Tamaraws
back up in the 57th minute with his own point blank strike off a Nico
Ferrer assist.
Just less than 24 hours since starting for Global Cebu in their final AFC Cup group F tie, late sub Marco Casambre
appeared to be UP's saving grace as the team initiated one final push
in the last 20 minutes of the match, leading to dramatic moments, but
FEU's defense held on.
The Tams will take on
the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 2-1 winners over the UST Growling Tigers in
the first semifinal, in the final, as Vince Santos looks to do a double in Men's Football after his Baby Tams retain their high school title earlier in the season by adding one in the college game in just his first season in charge.
