MAKATI—Coach Chot Reyes recently conceded that Gilas may not be fully ready for the SEABA Men's Championship beginning Friday.

But for him, the national team's lack of preparation should not be an alibi.

"We’re not going to use it as an excuse," said the multi-titled coach.

Gilas will be expecting a tougher competition from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore, whose respective domestic basketball scenes have evolved for the better in recent years especially due to the success of the ABL.

Still, the legendary PBA gaffer vowed, "We’re going to find ways to win because there’s a job [that is] put on our shoulders. We're focusing on ourselves, making sure that we're as ready as possible."

Gilas begins its bid for the lone Southeast Asian spot in the FIBA Asia Cup against Myanmar in the main game of the opening night triple-header at 7 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
