PFL Rundown: Negros, Cebu post contrasting triumphs

By Kevin Estrada

Wednesday's PFL action caps off with the Visayan sides showed their title credentials when they smothered separate foes today.

With their game that won them the league in the last three seasons within each other, Ceres Negros and Global Cebu nabbed three points in contrasting fashion to boost its own playoff hopes.

The Spanish connection of Fernando Rodriguez and Bienvenido Marañon were too much for Stallion Laguna, with the Busmen pummeled them for a 5-1 rout in Panaad for their third win of the season for 10 points, knocking Kaya FC Makati off the playoff places on goal difference.

Marañon struck first for Ceres, as he scored a first half brace (18', 37') that levels him with Marikina's Takumi Uesato at the top of the golden boot race with six goals each.

Fellow Andalusian Rodriguez then became the second Busman, and third overall in the league to register a hat-trick, hitting the target in the 44th, 57th and 84th minute as Jhan-jhan Melliza's 27th minute equalizer goes for naught once again to remain stuck near the cellar.

Over in Tagum, the Queen City squad get a huge boost heading into their return fixture at Makati on Sunday by silencing Davao Aguilas for the odd goal in three.

Akbar Nawas' men lead 2-0 early thanks to an own goal and Sekou Sylla's fourth strike of the year, before former Global man Richard Talaroc pulled one back for the home side at half time.

Neither side added another goal on the board but the reigning national champs secure their hold at third with their fourth win for 13 points.
