CLEARWATER--The Philippine Junior Blu Girls has shut out Turkey, 10-0, and South Africa, 3-0, posting back-to-back wins to bolster its chances in the opening round of the 2017 WBSC Junior Women’s Softball World Championship. The Blu Girls currently enjoy a 4-1 record in Pool A.
The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Filipinas immediately blasted their opponents with a flurry of runs at the bottom of the first with Juliet Omul batting in Reese Guevarra, Erika Fernandez, and Czara Galapon, before scoring on a wild pitch. Elsie dela Torre and Mary Maguad also scored runs, capitalizing on the opponent’s errors. Alaiza Talisik drove in Ivymhel Capistrano while Reese Guevarra singled to send Talisik home.
Against the South Africans, Galapon drove in Guevarra in the first while Lyca Blanco scored on a wild pitch and Omul batted in Guevarra in the seventh to win the game where pitcher Sierra Lange allowed only 1 hit to shutout their opponents.
"Our Junior Blu Girls are on a roll and I couldn't be more proud. The goal now is to sustain this performance and finish as one of the top teams in this tournament. With their 4-1 performance, I have no doubt that we can achieve this," said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier.
The Junior Blu Girls hopes to carry the momentum as they go up against defending champion and world no. 2 USA on Friday (Philippine Time), to make it to the top two slots in Pool A and advance in the championship round-robin.
