KUALA LUMPUR–Ryan Jafiri was knocked out in the second round to bomb out of contention in the 63.5kg class of the 29th Southeast Asian Games muay competition Monday at MITEC Hall 8 here.
After drawing a bye in the five-man field, Jafiri was caught by a ramming front kick and a thunderous punch from Khun Dima of Cambodia that sent him crashing with 1:11 left.
Jafiri was the fifth Filipino muay fighter to bid goodbye in the 11-nation conclave.
He, however, would still go home with a bronze medal.
“His foe was a muay legend in Cambodia,” said head coach Billy Amumno.
Also failing to make it to the finals was Jonathan Polosan, who succumbed to Souliyavong Latxasak of Laos in the 67kg preliminaries, 27-30, as well as Jay Harold Gregorio, who lost a controversial decision to Truong Quoc Hung of Vietnam, 28-29, in the 71kg class.
Khen Johnson Marques also bowed to Seuaphom Thongbang of Laos, 25-30, in the 54kg before Philip Delarmino made his sorry exit in the 57kg class following a sorry 27-30 setback to Thachtana Luangphon of Thailand.
