MANILA--Just 13 hours after beating Thailand in a comebacker, Perlas Pilipinas' comeback bid came up short this time against Malaysia with the home side pipping them in a close game, 60-56 in SEA Games' women's basketball tournament in KL's MABA Stadium.
It took a second quarter blast by the host nation to remain unbeaten after four games in the seven-team event as Pat Aquino and crew could have kissed their gold medal hopes goodbye, slipping to a 3-2 record behind Indonesia (3-1) and Thailand (2-1).
Yin Yin Chong paced the Malaysians with 12 points which was backed up by Fook Yee Yap's 10 and Hui Pin Pang's 9, who moved closer to defending the SEAG plum as they moved up to 4-0.
Allana Lim's game-high 17 markers went down the drain for Perlas as they almost came back from 16 points down, but they can only level terms at 54 apiece with 2:45 left on Ara Abaca's three as Malaysia kept steady from the foul line to stymie their comeback trail.
