PBA

MANILA--Marinerong Pilipino completed the unthinkable.

The sixth-seeded Skippers officially eliminated the third-seeded Tanduay Rhum Masters in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup quarterfinals, earning a 65-64 win in the rubber match on Tuesday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Marinero rallied from 10 points down at the end of the third quarter but needed some huge defensive stops--and lucky breaks--at the death to secure the last seat to the semifinals.

“We’ve always been telling them on playing the game the right way. And in the end, the wisdom was there for the players,” said Coach Koy Banal, whose Skippers squad completely shattered the Rhum Masters' twice-to-beat advantage to earn the right to face the Cignal Hawkeyes in the best-of-three semis.

Robbie Herndon led Marinero with another double-double of 13 points including the eventual game-winner with 2:14 left and 13 rebounds alongside two steals.

Jerwin Gaco led Tanduay with 17 points and three boards.
