QUEZON CITY -- Far Eastern U rode on a hot third quarter to eke
out a 64-58 win over Ateneo in the first game of women’s basketball action of
the UAAP Season 80 Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Trailing in the first two quarters, the Lady Tamaraws
went smoking in the third, scoring 13 points while limiting the Lady Eagles to
just six for a 43-39 lead. Valerie Mamaril and Camille Taguiam joint forces in
that period with four points apiece.
The fourth period
turned out to be a shoot-out, but the ladies from Morayta hung tough for the
victory to drag the Lady Eagles with them at 2-1
Mamaril flirted with a double-double, finishing with 16
points and nine rebounds, while Precious Arellado had 15 with eight boards and
three assists. Taguiam was the third Lady Tam in double-digits with 11.
Hazelle Yam topscored
for Ateneo with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Tina Deacon pumped
in 11 and 6 boards, while Wednesday's hero Katrina Guytingco had a near double-double of 10 and
nine.
