MANILA—University of the East added to the woes of the
University of the Philippines, but had to survive a near-meltdown for a 52-42
win in the second women’s basketball game of Sunday’s UAAP Season 80 action at
the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The Lady Warriors nearly blew a 17-point lead at the
start of the fourth period as it only scored four points the entire quarter to
the Lady Maroons’ 11 but still managed to pull off the win.
Daphne Esplana took UP to her shoulders, scoring nine of
the team’s total 4Q output only to sputter in the end.
The win thus forced the Recto-based squad to a tie with Far
Eastern U at 2-1 win-loss card while UP is still winless in three outings.
Love Joy Sto. Domingo led the Lady Warrior assault with an
all-around game of 15 points, 17 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two
blocks.
Bienca Ramos also issued a double-double with 12 and 11
rebounds, while Joyce Francisco likewise had 12 markers.
Esplana had 16 markers and five rebounds, but committed
six turnovers, even as Marian Domingo grabbed a game-high 19 boards and 13
points for UP.
