Ateneo maintains sweep bid, beats FEU to gain first Final Four seat

QUEZON CITY--Ateneo Blue Eagles remain undefeated after their tough win against the team whose hungry in continuing their winning streak, the FEU Tamaraws, with the score of 70-59.

The Blue Eagles squad maintained to keep their record unblemished, which makes them the first team who will grab a final four seat in this UAAP Season 80.

The first half of the game was not in favor of Ateneo as FEU was shooting baskets which led to their biggest lead against Ateneo at 21-12 in the first quarter. As Cani, shooting threes and Iñigo doing his job respectively.

"We didn't start off on the right foot. We had a bad first quarter but we're quite happy with our second, third and fourth quarters, that's how we like to play especially on the defensive end," said Ateneo Assistant Coach Sandy Arespacochaga.

"We really had a bad start, akala namin kaya namin individually eh. Naisip namin bakit kami magkakanya-kanya eh kaya nga kami naging 9-0 before kasi we really played as a team. So nung second half we just stick to one another, we did what we did best at hindi kami nag-iwanan, so luckily nakuha namin yung pace ng game and our shots fell in na," Matt Nieto mentioned.

Due to Verano's effort in the second quarter, the Blue Eagles are able to back on track and keep the score close with FEU. Ateneo chases the Tamaraws with the score, 52-57 because of Tolentino's layup before the final quarter.

Players of the game, Matt Nieto, and Raffy Verano both chipped in 14 points to win the game. While Ron Dennison had 12 points and Arvin Tolentino had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the FEU Tamaraws.

Ateneo Blue Eagles will face the UE Red Warriors while the FEU Tamaraws will face the UP Fighting Maroons. Both games will be at the Mall of Asia Arena on October 28, 2017.
