MAKATI—With a spot in the 2020 Olympics still in sight, the RP Blu Girls gun for a spot in next year's Asian Games through the 11th Asian Women's Softball Championship beginning Tuesday.

The women's team are to fly to Taichung City, Taiwan for the said tournament, which also serves as the Asian qualifier for the Softball World Championship.

The Ven Dizer-mentored Blu Girls, ranked 17th in the world, were drawn to a tough group that has world number one Japan and host team Chinese Taipei in it.

But ASAPHIL president Jean Henri Lhuillier believes that the Philippine team will stand a chance especially that it's still on a high from upsetting Canada and Australia in various tournaments earlier this year.

"I'm confident we'll be battling it out for the top honors considering their excellent showing in their recent tournaments," he said during the send-off press conference of the team at Cebuana Lhuillier head office on Thursday. "They've been training diligently, so the team is in good shape."

After the Asian championship, which will run until Dec. 5, the Blu Girls will prepare for the world championship, the Olympic Asia-Oceania qualifier, and the Olympic open qualifier for the next two years aside from the Asian Games and the other tournaments they will play.

"We will certainly be giving our best to win and bring honor to the Philippines," said catcher Cheska Altamonte.
