Cocolife upends UST for 2-2 record in PSL Grand Prix

By Ricky Manliguis

SAN JUAN—Cocolife made it back-to-back wins as it downed debuting Victoria Sports-University of Santo Tomas, 25-19, 16-25, 25-17, 25-20 in the second game of Tuesday action of the 2017 Chooks-To-Go Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the FilOil Flying V Centre November 7.

Fresh from its come-from-behind thriller win agains Cignal HD in Bacolod City, the Asset Managers leaned on the scoring troika of imports Taylor Milton, Shar Latai Manu-Olevao and Michelle Gumabao as it fended a stubborn stand by the guest team for an even 2-2 win-loss record in the tournament.

Milton and Manu-Olevao combined for 33 of the team’s 54 attack points to finish with 21 and 20 markers, respectively, while team captain Gumabao joined the scoring parade with 16 points.

Cocolife also had 12 service aces as compared to UST’s two, but committed 30 miscues, majority of which came in the second frame.

“Ito ‘yung mga pagkakataon na must-win itong larong ito para makabuwelo kami. Para ‘di kami sink or swim. Ngayon dire-diretso na kami, umaangat na kami,” Cocolife coach Emilio “Kungfu” Reyes said.

But Reyes also pointed out the lapses his team did in the game, especially the errors it gave away to the Tigresses.

“Every time ‘di kami nakakakuha ng first ball, ‘yun ang nagiging problema namin lalo na nung second set. Siguro kinargahan ng UST ‘yung service n’ya, kami naman ang nagwawala sa first ball,” he added.

Reyes and the rest of his squad hopes to sustain the momentum as it faces F2 Logistics on Saturday in Malolos, Bulacan.

Dimdim Pacres and Carla Sandoval both scored 14 points for UST, while Japanese reinforcement Yukie Inamasu pumped in 11 markers.
