Benilde fends off Arellano in thrilling shootout, forces winner-take-all tiff for NCAA football crown

By Kevin Estrada

MANILA--College of St. Benilde held their nerve from 12 yards out to pip Arellano to force a winner-take-all Wednesday in the NCAA Men's football final Monday evening at the Rizal Memorial.

With 120 minutes not enough to break a 1-1 deadlock, the Blazers stay composed from the penalty spot over the Chiefs to even the series at one match apiece, prevailing by a 4-3 scoreline.

However, Marlon Maro's men had to do it the hard way as Arellano went ahead just seven minutes in, thanks to Cyril Sonquillios' early strike.

Major Dean Ebarle leveled matters in the 61st minute, heading home on a Lorenzo Genco cross past Jericho Desalisa.

Both schools failed to find the net since then and had to test their mettle on penalties, in which Jake Vicen made a crucial stop to save Benilde's season, as Moiselle Alforque forced the third and final match with the decisive spot kick.
