Araña becomes coach for a play in victory over Picanto

By JP Abcede

Finding himself as the elder statesman of the GlobalPort Batang Pier, Ryan Araña took over the coaching duties, with the blessing of head mentor Pido Jarencio, during a sequence.

"Si coach Pido parang he let me (draw up the play)," Araña recalled. "Sina Stanley (Pringle), Kelly (Nabong) at Sean Anthony were laughing at the play pero positive naman at naconvert naman play. Atsaka iyong defensive strategy na ginawa ko for that maayos naman."

Jarencio lauded Araña, "Yung respetuhan (with each other), andyan. Noong nakita akong umupo, si Ryan, nagko-comment. Sabi ko, 'Sige. Ikaw na.' Ayun, mga naglalaro na lang (his players)."

Now that has been brought into the open, the former De La Salle Green Archer was inquired on whether he sees himself as a tactician in the future.

"Ok lang sa akin," Araña sheepishly replied. "Pero maganda yung sistema ni coach Pido sa akin. Parang barkada lang namin si coach Pido."

"Binibigyan niya kami ng leeway na gawin [what we like]," Araña added. "Pero kami naman meron kaming hangganan. Ayaw namin sobrahan or ayaw naming abusuhin ang kabaitan ni coach Pido sa amin."
