MAKATI -- Kaya-Iloilo deal league leading JPV Marikina it's first setback of the season as they came out 1-0 winners last Saturday night in UMak.

Eric Giganto produced the lone goal in the 13th minute, pouncing in a defensive gaffe by Alvin Sarmiento as the hosts got a perfect start to their sendoff as they won their first of their final two matches in Makati.

Ref Cuaresma became a bedrock between the posts as he came up with a clean sheet, turning the second half into a goalkeeping masterclass in which he thwarted multiple attacks by Voltes, with Kennedy Uzoka getting the closest chance for the visitors midway through the final frame but was denied by the post.

“But I don’t call it (the win) lucky. I consider it hard work from all the players. It was a thrilling game. I’m proud to have Ref’s first clean sheet. He really saved us. We got our first win in the league, so we’re very happy,” Marcaida quoted after the tiff.

The home side even reduced to 10 men when midfielder Alfred Osei was sent off on a second bookable offence, yet their back-line held firm to bounce back from their setback away at Ceres Negros in a gritty fashion.

"Coach Noel’s not giving us an easy time. Hard work was placed in the game. And being one of the titos of the PFL, it’s important to put up a good performance. Overall, it was a collective effort and a good win," Cuaresma said after the match
