Polli penalty lifts Laguna over Cebu

BINAN--Last year, Stallion Laguna scored its first win at its home field, the Binan Football Stadium, in an officially designated road game.

On Wednesday night, Laguna did it again.

Laguna got its first full three points at its "stable" in its first official away match of the PFL season, dealing Cebu, the designated home club, a 1-2 defeat.

Carlo Polli's late penalty made the difference as Laguna shrugged off an iffy mid-second half moment and preserved the win over Cebu.

Following a scoreless first half, Laguna got into the board first in the 57th minute as Fitch Arboleda got the hold of the long ball and sent the ball past Patrick Deyto.

Cebu, however, quickly equalized as Darryl Roberts headed the ball past Bitoy Rosalia just before the hour minute mark.

A bit of controversy happened in the 65th minute when Balut Doctora thought he found the open net to put Laguna back ahead.

However, a defender cleared the ball out just as the ball was making its way into the goalmouth. The assistant referee let the play continue to the dismay of the team.

Laguna got a shot for the win as late substitute Jhan-Jhan Melliza was fouled by Jerry Barbaso inside the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot.

Carlo Polli took the penalty shot and sent the ball in for the 2-1 count.

Cebu still put up a late scare in the 87th minute as Rufo Sanchez found an opening and flicked the ball in, but Bitoy Rosalia made what would be the game-saving save.

Sanchez then committed a bookable offense in the 90th that eventually sent him off the match as he incurred a yellow card in the first half, bringing Cebu down to 10 men in the end.

Laguna momentarily moved up to second spot but will surely end up in third at the end of the night due to the Negros-Iloilo game in Bacolod later Wednesday.
