MANILA—And still growling.
University of Santo Tomas continued its legacy of
excellence, retaining the over-all seniors general championship at the conclusion of UAAP
Season 80.
The España-based squad made good in six of the total 16 sporting disciplines to rack
up 281.5 points, edging runner-ups De La Salle University and University of the
Philippines for its back-to-back titles and 42nd over-all in the
80-year history of the league.
Bannering the winners are the women’s beach volleyball
tandem of Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray, who retained the women’s title against
Far Eastern University, and the poomsae team which took the overall title.
Other gold medal winners for UST are in women’s tennis,
women’s track and field, and judo (men’s and women’s).
They also finished second in both men’s and womens’ football, men’s beach volleyball,
table tennis (men’s and women’s), men’s fencing, and softball.
Bronze medals came from women’s basketball, women’s
swimming, and men’s taekwondo.
The Green Archers finished close second with 271 points,
headlined by championships in women’s volleyball, women’s football, women’s table tennis, women’s
chess, and women’s badminton.
Men’s football champs UP finished in the podium with 234
points, while Ateneo got fourth with 228.5 anchored on its wins in men’s
basketball and a double in swimming.
National U, the Season 81 hosts, got 180 points behind first
places in women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, men’s beach volleyball, men’s chess, men’s
table tennis, men’s badminton, and a sweep in taekwondo.
Rounding out the list were double fencing and men’s tennis winners
University of the East (168 pts.), season hosts and women’s track and field
winners FEU (151 pts.), and Adamson U (68pts.), which got golds in baseball and
softball.
Title winners score 15 points, while the runner-ups got 12
and third placers 10 points.
