QUEZON CITY—And Barangay Ginebra is on fire.
Banking on a hot start, the Gin Kings continued its winning ways as it smothered Alaska, 105-86, for its fourth straight win in the nightcap of Sunday action of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The win, the fith in 10 games, enabled the crowd darlings to bolter its chances for a place in the quarterfinals as it tied GlobalPort in sixth to seventh place in the standings.
The two teams will meet on July 6 at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Ginebra rolled to an early 30-16 first quarter lead behind Justin Brownlee and Joe Devance, while Brownlee teamed up with LA Tenorio combing for 16 of the team’s 33 points in the second for an insurmountable 63-38 halftime edge.
The onslaught continued in the second half, with the lead ballooning to as high a 33 points, 85-52, on a Tenorio split and held on from there.
Brownlee flirted with a triple-double, fashioning out 28 points, nine rebounds and eight assists before being rested the entire fourth quarter. Tenorio chipped in 12 with five steals and five boards. Sol Mercado and Japeth Aguilar both cashed in 10.
Alaska dropped to a tie with idle TNT KaTropa at 7-3. Vic Manuel issued 20 points, his ninth straight 20-plus outing, but got little help from Anotnio Campbell, who scored just six points and eight rebounds.
The Aces continue to miss the services of Calvin Abueva and Jeron Teng.
