Laguna stays in race for second after blasting Marikina

By Ivan Saldajeno

BINAN--Stallion Laguna is back!

After a long layoff, Laguna returned to PFL play with a bang, mauling Marikina, 4-0, at the Binan Football Stadium on Wednesday.

A first half blitz was all Laguna needed to get the crucial three points the club needs if it still wants to make it to the AFC Cup through the backdoor.

Nate Alquiros put the home side on the board in the 11th minute after Fitch Arboleda saw him on a short cross inside the box.

Arboleda then put himself on the scoreboard after converting in the 27th minute off a great feed from Jhan-Jhan Melliza.

Carlo Polli then made it 3-0 for Laguna after scoring on a 32nd minute putback when Nelson Gasic got a piece of Abou Sy's attempt only for the ball to land at Polli's feet.

Late substitute Gino Clarino put the icing on the cake in the 79th minute as he was all alone for the goal.

With the blowout win, Laguna, which moved up to 34 points, is now within eight points of Iloilo for second place ahead of their huge showdown on Sunday at the said venue.

Marikina remains stuck at 20 points with one match left in its schedule, a showdown also against Iloilo next Wednesday in Carmona.
