TAGUIG--Now seeing the fruits of the now Republic Act 10699, Senator Sonny Angara is now eyeing another reason to motivate the Filipino athletes.

After increasing the cash incentives for medalists in international meets, Angara, the vice chairman of Senate's finance committee, now bats to increase the athletes' allowances.

We should provide them with enough support and assistance to help them develop their potential and empower them to win,” Angara said during a Senate budget hearing with the Philippine Sports Commission in Pasay on Thursday.

The medalists of the recently concluded Asian Games led by champions Hidilyn Diaz and Margie Didal also came to the hearing as they voiced out their concerns.

In particular, Angara is pushing for a PHP5,000 increase in the allowances of each athlete.

At present, eight "platinum" athletes, including Diaz, get PHP45,000 each as monthly allowance, while 456 others are getting PHP10,200 each from the commission. In total, 887 national athletes are being funded by the commission.
