Batang Pinoy opening rescheduled due to Ompong

By Ivan Saldajeno

MANILA--As the entire province of Benguet braces for Typhoon Ompong, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Baguio city government decided to forego the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Batang Pinoy games to be held in the said province on Saturday.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, Butch Ramirez, the chairman of the commission, and city mayor Maurico Domogan made the "mutual" decision "to ensure the safety of all the participants."

However, they clarified that the meet will still push through.

"Competitions shall start on the 17th of September to give delegations ample time for safe travel," the statement added.

To make up for the cancelled opening ceremonies, both Ramirez and Domogan said, "A grand closing celebration shall instead be held on September 22, 2018."

As of writing, the commission is making necessary adjustments to the schedule of the games.
