Crusaders tame Blue Dragons; Unicorns bounce back in UCSAA 8 hoopfest

By Dugout Philippines

PASIG—Pasig Catholic College gave its new coach Bong Dela Cruz his first win after upsetting ICCT Colleges, 89-81, in the resumption of basketball action of the Universities, Colleges, and Schools Athletic Association (UCSAA) Season 8 at the PCC Gymnasium, Sept. 4.

In a rematch of last year’s finals, the Crusaders exacted revenge with five players in double figures against the defending champs Blue Dragons en route to the wire-to-wire victory in front of a supportive PCC faithful.

Jan Kyle Salen paced PCC with a game-high 23 points, but it was Dict Bendictos and Lander Canon who stole the spotlight after their consecutive baskets gave the team a 12-point advantage, 88-76, with 1:20 left in the match.

Benedictos chipped in 19 points, while Canon, Algie Chavenia and Lester Tamayo all registered 13 markers.

ICCT failed to sustain the momentum it got from its rousing win on opening day and fell to an even 1-1 card. Ariel Fajardo issued 18 points, while Ernest Oduca and Shawn Icaro had 16 and 10 respectively.

St. Dominic Savio, meanwhile, bounced back from its loss to ICCT, venting its ire on seniors debutantes First City Providential College, 83-78, in the opening seniors’ match.

Leslie Ledama, Mark Anthony Briones, Derick de Leon and Jao Arellano took turns frustrating the Royal Eagles in the endgame, grabbing the lead for good at 77-76 on Ledema’s charity on the 1:48 mark of the final canto. Arellano and Briones then iced the game with splits from the stripe.

De Leon issued 21 points for this season’s host Unicorns, even as Briones followed suit with 20. Ledema and Arellano combined for 21 markers.

Ronelle Ocampo cashed in 22 points for First City in the loss.
