Phoenix outshines Meralco; Bolts' losing streak continues

MANILA--The Phoenix Fuel Masters got their second straight victory for an impressive 4-1 record in the PBA Governors Cup as they downed the Meralco Bolts Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Import Eugene Phelps and Matthew Wright shone in the second period and helped the Phoenix take a five-point lead at halftime, 47-42.

Phelps then dropped 11 points in the third quarter with some help from Calvin Abueva.

The Bolts tried to cut the lead, but Wright secured the Fuel Masters’ advantage, 74-63, entering the fourth period.

Meralco cut the lead down to 10, 72-82, but Phoenix made an 11-2 run against the Bolts to stretch the lead to 19, 93-74, with only 4:46 remaining.

The game ended in a 10-point difference, 96-86, in favor of the Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Phelps scored 24 points and 19 rebounds, while Wright had 16 points on a perfect 4-for-4 beyond the three point arc and Jason Perkins made 13 points and seven rebounds. LA Revilla, adjudged the best player of the game, finished with eight points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  

Chris Newsome and Allen Durham scored 18 and 16 points respectively, but they were not enough to give the Bolts their second win.

They played without Ranidel de Ocampo and Jared Dilinger as they are still recovering from their respective injuries.

Aside from this, the Bolts struggled with their shots, only making 33 out of 86 attempts as they suffered their third straight loss, dropping to a 1-3 record.

Meralco 86 - Newsome 18, Durham 16, Lanete 11, Hugnatan 10, Caram 7, Salva 6, Amer 5, Sedurifa 3, Hodge 2, Faundo 0, Atkins 0, Canaleta 0.

Quarters: 21-22, 47-42, 74-63, 96-86.
