PASAY--Chot Reyes announced on Tuesday night that he will step down as the head coach of the Philippine national men's basketball team.
"Now that the PBA has opened its doors fully to the SBP and the national team, it is time for me to step aside," Reyes said in a statement posted on his social media channels.
The former multi-titled PBA coach then added that his focus will now be on molding the Gilas Cadets program ahead of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
He also threw his full support to current Gilas Elites coach Yeng Guiao on behalf of "all the players and coaches who have sacrificed and put their careers on the line for flag and country."
"We wish Coach Yeng and the current team great success as they continue the [FIBA] World Cup journey. We are with you," continued Reyes.
Interestingly, the development came a week after SBP chairman emeritus Manny Pangilinan hinted at a possibility of Guiao taking over the Gilas program on a long-term basis.
