UAAP Season 81 chess: NU, DLSU still unscathed

By Ricky Manliguis

MANILA-- National University and De la Salle University continued its unbeaten run, scraping past its respective opponents in Round 2 of the UAAP Season 81 chess competitions Saturday at the Quadricentennial Pavillion of University of Santo Tomas.

Banking on wins by International Master Paulo Bersamina and Christian Magtabog on Boards 1 and 3, the four-peat seeking Bullodgs pulled off a 2.5-1.5 squeaker over La Salle to stay unbeaten at 2-0.

Reigning MVP Bersamina and Magtabog somehow eased the pain for NU, after Robin Ignacio only produced a draw in Board 2 while freshman Arnel June Iligan lost on Board 4.

In the women's side, the Lady Green Woodpushers got tested by a determined Far Eastern U side before posting a 2.5-1.5 win to also lead the pack with a 2-0 slate.

Ella Moulic and Samantha Revita provided the wins for DLSU, which saw its top board player WCM Mira Mirano settling for a draw.

In other men's results, Adamson humbled Ateneo, 3-1, FEU downed UP, 3-1, while UST eked out a 2.5-1.5 win over University of the East.

Other women's results saw UST nipping Ateneo, 2.5-1.5, UE stunning NU, 2.5-1.5, while Adamson and UP battled to a 2-2 stalemate.

Action resumes tomorrow with Round 3 featuring DLSU against Ateneo, FEU taking on NU, UST battling UP, and UE trading moves with Adamson in the men's draw.

Women's match-ups are FEU over Ateneo, UP versus DLSU, UE vs. Adamson, and UST against NU.
