SAN JUAN-- Far Eastern U recovered
from a shocking loss the last time out as it smothered University of the
Philippines, 89-73, in the first game of seniors' action of UAAP Season 81
basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre Sunday.
a
Bannered by five players in double
figures, the Tamaraws went smoking from the get-go to smother the Maroons and rebounded
from a shock 74-76 loss against UST last week with a 2-1 win-loss card.
UP, playing without coach Bo Perasol
due to a one-game suspension, dropped to its second straight game for 1-2.
After limiting UP to its lowest
scoring quarter of the season at 19 points, FEU wrecked havoc in the second
half for a 25-point bubble, 69-44, at the end of three.
The Maroons countered with a 10-0 run
in the start of the fourth quarter, but could only trim the deficit to 14
points as FEU's outside scoring proved effective down the stretch.
Prinze Orizu continued his monstrous
performance this season with 15 points and seven rebounds on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting
from the field. He also put the clamps on UP big Bright Akhuetie, who only had
nine markers and 11 rebounds.
Arvin Tolentino chipped in 13 markers off
the bench, Wendell Comboy added 12, while Axel Iñigo and Jasper Parker
contributed 11 apiece for FEU.
“It was a defensive game para sa amin.
Yung opensa namin, bonus lang. Good job by everyone, the players stuck to our
gameplan,” said FEU coach Olsen Racela.
“Again, the run was an effect of our
defense kaya nagalit ako nung nag 10-0 run sila (nung fourth). Hindi kami dapat
nag-stop ng offense with offense. UP had an off night. Again, maganda rin yung
naging execution namin,” he added.
Over-all, the Tamaraws shot 52 percent
from the field, while lording it over in points in the paint, 45-28.
Brothers Javi and Juan Gomez de Liaño
paced the Maroons with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
