PASAY--Even if San Miguel placed one foot into a spot in the PBA Governors' Cup quarterfinals with a 114-107 win against NorthPort at the Cuneta Astrodome on Wednesday night, Coach Leo Austria was not impressed with how his team notched the crucial win, even telling reporters after the game that his team played overconfident basketball.

"Natutuwa ako na nanalo kami pero the way we played defense, hindi masaya, hindi maganda. Maybe because of the last two wins namin against Phoenix at saka Talk 'n Text, a little bit lax kami," Austria said. "We're not able to execute our game plan on defense."

It was imminent in the last three quarters, where the Beermen, after limiting the Batang Pier to just 19 points in the first 12 minutes, conceded 88 points and even even found themselves in danger of even dropping the game after the Batang Pier came to within one, 107-108, with 1:46 to play before finally holding them off.

"It's very obvious ang defense namin is not that strong dahil yun ang lagi naming binibigyan ng pansin. Our goal is to not get their scoring average, which is 101, but tonight, [they scored] more than 101 since we didn't play defense except in the last two possessions, where we're able to stop them," Austria continued.

He then gave credit to NorthPort for giving SMB a fight.

"I know from the start that this will not be an easy game because we're still thinking that Global (NorthPort) still have a chance, although it's very slim. They want to have a game na talagang malalaman na sila'y lumalaban hanggang huli. Nakita naman natin kanina," he further said.
