FEU men, La Salle women continue sharp form at end of UAAP chess first round

MANILA-- Far Eastern U and La Salle stayed true to form, whipping its respective rivals to remain on top of the leaderboard at the close of the first round-robin of the UAAP Season 81 chess tournament at the University of Santo Tomas Quadricentennial Pavillion Saturday afternoon. 

The Tamaraws stayed unbeaten after seven rounds after pulling off a masterful 3-1 win over Adamson U for 21.5 points on six wins and a draw.  

John Jasper Laxamana and Romy Fagon made up from back-to-back draws by International Master John Marvin Miciano and Jeth Romy Morado on Boards 1 and 2 with masterful wins on Boards 3 and 4 for FEU. 

Defending men's champion National U, meanwhile, posted a 3-1 win over University of the Philippines to remain at third place with 16 points, five-and-a-half points behind the leaders. 

Other men's results include UST pulling off a 2-2 draw with Ateneo, while University of the East shocked La Salle, 3-1. 

In the women's  side, reigning titlists La Salle survived another slip-up by top board player WCM Mira Mirano in a 3-1 thumping of Adamson U to remain ahead of second-place University of the Philippines with 18.5 points. 

The Lady Maroons,on the other had,  moved half a point off the pace as it squeaked past University of Santo Tomas, 2.5-1.5.

University of the East nosed out Ateneo, 2.5-1.5, while National U fashioned out the same scoreline opposite Far Eastern U to complete the women's matches.

Round 8 action will resume tomorrow still at UST.
