MANILA--Green Archers United Globe wrapped up their season-long dominance to win the Weekend Futbol League Elite division title with a 2-1 win over Army last Sunday in De La Salle Zobel.
The result puts United at 23 points with one match left in the round-robin competition. Second-place Ateneo is at 11 points with three matches remaining, meaning the best they can manage is 20 points, short of GAU's total.
Archer striker Joel Okono began the scoring in the 16th minute with a smooth finish against Army netminder Kuloy Muñoz. His usual strike partner, Jimuel Ariola, was unavailable to play that day.
Early in the second half Army exploited some slack marking to level with an excellent angled header from Roynick Bedia.
But Green Archers mentor Dolfo Alicante brought on towering forward Cristian Zubiri as a second half sub, and the former Taft standout did not disappoint. At the hour mark he nodded in John Gumban's cross past Muñoz for the last goal of the game that claimed the three points and the trophy.
Watch the full highlights here, including a bunch of top saves from both Muñoz and GAU custodian Henri Ebanda.
Although the title has been won, the remainder of the fixtures will still be played out, with Adamson hoping to pip Ateneo for second place. The Falcons are on 10 points from seven games.
