MANILA--After six intense weeks of regular tournament play, the Season 2 of the Makabansa Basketball League (MBL) moved to the semifinals phase with team seeding having taken shape.

From the field of 12 teams, PLDT Digital lead the pack this year with a record of 5 wins and 0 losses and a plus/minus rating of +213.25. At their heels, seeded 2nd, are MBL Season 1 champions, Senate Advocates, with a similar win-loss record of 5-0 and a +186 rating, and the MERALCO Linemen grabbing 3rd seed, also at 5-0 and +45.

Next are last year’s 2nd runner up, the DENR Environmental Warriors with the 4th seed (4-1, +193), the NLEX Road Movers at 5th seed (4-1, +68), and the 6th seed PNP Peacekeepers (3-2, +124).

At the bottom half of the seeding are 7th seed SMART Dream Team (3-2,+41), 8th seed COMELEC Sentinels (3-2, -11), 9th seed Office of the President Kamao (3-2, -18), 10th seed DOE Energizers (3-2, -15.25), 11th seed HOR Rulemakers (2-3, -20), and finally at 12th seed, the OSG Patriots (2-3,-121).

Per MBL regulations, the tournament followed a single round robin elimination within three team brackets, with the top four teams of each bracket advancing to the playoffs.

The playoffs will now be a knockout round of 12, where top seeds compete against lower seeds (e.g.; rank #1 vs rank #12; rank #2 vs rank #11, etc.), followed by a knockout round by the prevailing six. The remaining three teams will have a single round robin in the semi-final round, with the top contenders advancing to the finals in a best-of-three championship.

On the docket last Nov. 10 were games between top seeded PLDT Digital vs. 12th seed OSG Patriots, 2nd seed Senate Advocates vs. 11th seed HOR Rulemakers, and 3rd seed MERALCO Linemen vs. 10th seed DOE Energizers.

Nov. 11 games were between 4th seed DENR Environmental Warriors vs. 9th seed Office of the President Kamao, 5th seed NLEX Road Movers vs. 8th seed COMELEC Sentinels, and 6th seed PNP Peacekeepers vs. 7th seed SMART Dream Team.

The MBL is a basketball tournament involving teams from different government offices and private groups which was formed to promote health and wellness, and foster camaraderie amongst the participants. Through sportsmanship and healthy competition, the MBL aims to solidify partnerships in and among the public and private sectors to better serve the public.

The winning teams shall advance to the next round of the playoffs or the Round-of-6 (knockout matches) which are scheduled on Nov. 17, Saturday. After that is a semi-final round (single round robin round for the remaining three teams), after which the top two teams will advance to the finals. At the start of the tournament, each team chose a beneficiary, with the winning teams’ beneficiaries receiving cash prizes as a donation.

MBL Season 2 is powered by Kings of the Court (KOTC) Sports Organizing Services, Inc. and is proudly sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation, Inc., Metro Pacific Investments Corp., Pazifik Power, Inc., Corporate Holdings Management, Inc., and the ANC Group of Companies.

Unless otherwise announced, all games will be held at the MERALCO Fitness Center every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
