MANILA—Cignal HD notched its first win, but had a tough
customer in Cocolife for a 20-25, 25-13, 25-14,24-26,17-15 win in the last game
of Saturday action of the 2018 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference at
the Ynares Arena in Pasig City.
Eager to bounce back from its opening-day setback, the HD
Spikers survived a wild wind-up in the fifth set against a determined Cocolife
squad to improve to an even 1-1 card.
The Asset Managers managed to mount a rally bridging the
fourth and fifth sets and even held two match points in the decider, the last
being 15-14 on Kalei Mau’s crosscourt hit.
That set the HD Spikers’ uprising, with Rose Doria and team
captain Rachel Ann Daquis scoring consecutive points to snatch match point,
16-15.
Justine Tiu went on for one final assault for Cocolife, but
her attack went wide, sending the Cignal faithful to a celebration.
Mylene Paat joined forces with newly-minted league
Ambassador Daquis anew as the former fired 17 points spiked on 15 attacks, while the
latter compiled 12 on 10 hits.
Mau finished the match with a game-best 20 markers on 16
spikes and four blocks for Cocolife, which fell to a 0-2 record. Gyra Barroga
added 11, while Tiu notched 10.
