MANILA—The Philippine Lady Volcanoes are set to head to Borneo for a rugby sevens tournament  this weekend to kick off their preparation for the Southeast Asian Games.

Simply called Borneo 7's, the Lady Volcanoes will take on familiar opponents in neighbors Singapore and Malaysia, while they also have Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Russia, and Belgium as their foes.

A developmental pool consisting of Kaia Baui, Leonor Boroy, Alyana Del Fierro, Aldee Denuyo, Kaye Honoras, Helena Indigne, Ma. Isabella Nepumuceno, Aiumi Ono, Rassiel Sales, Maricar Samson, Acee San Juan, and Sylvia Tudoc will represent the Philippines with former Jamaican national sevens coach Andy Brown at the helm.

“Coach Andy brings a wealth of experience, so we are lucky to have his leadership for the national women’s program,” said PRFU official Jakey Letts.

On the other hand, San Juan hopes for more tourneys for the Lady Volcanoes to join as they look to go back to the podium in the SEA Games as hosts.

“The more competitions we play in, the better we are going to be prepared," said San Juan. "Our domestic competitions are improving. However, international exposure allows our skills and abilities to be tested at the highest level.”
